The Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the media watchdog in Pakistan, has ridiculed a part of the talk show hosted by private TV channel News One on the show 'G for Gharida' aired on February 10. The channel has been issued a show cause notice stating that it is insulting.

The notice sent to the channel by PEMRA states that the airing of these insulting remarks in Gharida Farooqi's program without any editorial control is a total violation of section 20 of PEMRA and Concerns about the performance of gatekeeping tools.

PEMRA has directed the Chief Executive Officer of News One to give a written reply within four days stating that in case of violation of PEMRA rules, other disciplinary action including fine, suspension and revocation of license will be taken against him under PEMRA Ordinance 2002. Why not implement it?

On Twitter, TV channel's news director Tariq Mahmood and program host Gharida Farooqi accused PEMRA of calling cable operators to shut down News One TV across the country.

The BBC repeatedly tried to get PEMRA to take a stand on the allegations of blocking News One's broadcasts and what are the words 'ridiculous / insulting' in Gharida Farooqi's program. "We'll talk later."

A one-minute-two-second clip of the 'G for Gharida' program has gone viral on social media in Pakistan since last night and a hashtag is being run against Gharida Farooqi from the ruling party's official Twitter handle @PTIofficial.

PTI-affiliated politicians, government ministers and others have accused Gharida Farooqi's program of making very absurd and meaningful remarks about Federal Minister Murad Saeed.

It may be recalled that this week, Minister Imran Khan had distributed certificates of merit among the ten best federal ministries in which the ministry of Communications Minister Murad Saeed was awarded the certificate of excellence, which was followed by a large number of users on social media. Murad Saeed's performance was the subject of discussion.

Gharida Farooqi's program on Thursday (February 10) was also about Prime Minister Imran Khan's distribution of awards among 10 federal ministers and the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister.
